Description of Event:
Percentile ranks (e.g., top 10%) are commonly used to communicate the results of psychological assessments, including evaluations of recidivism risk. Evaluators have increased confidence in percentile norms when they are regularly examined and updated if necessary. In this presentation, Dr. Hilton will present updated percentile norms for the Ontario Domestic Assault Risk Assessment (ODARA), a widely used actuarial risk tool for assessing the likelihood of intimate partner violence (IPV) recidivism. New norms are needed because recent research has found that the distribution of scores to be higher than the original norms (which were from Ontario in the 1990s). Participants will obtain guidance as to how the new norms can be used for the interpretation of relative risk of IPV recidivism among men who assault their intimate partner.
Dr. N. Zoe Hilton is Professor of Psychiatry in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine and Professor in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto, and Research Chair in Forensic Mental Health at Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care in Penetanguishene, Ontario. Dr. Hilton was the lead on the research team that developed the Ontario Domestic Assault Risk Assessment (ODARA), a brief actuarial tool created to aid decision making by police and other first responders to intimate partner violence. She is currently conducting research into intimate partner violence risk assessment, violence risk communication, and coercive control in multiple Canadian provinces. For over 35 years, she has studied IPV risk, led multi-site inter-disciplinary teams, and translated research products into practical applications.
