Cross-Cultural Validity of Structured Risk Assessment Tools: What Does the Research Tell Us?
About Instructor
Presenter: Maaike Helmus, PhD
SAARNA Vice-President, Research
Many racial and ethnic groups are over-represented in the criminal legal system, and there are reasons to be concerned about whether risk assessment tools developed on predominantly White samples would apply to different racial/ethnic groups. This session will summarize existing research on cross-cultural validity and generalizability of risk factors and risk tools, as well as some recent research on potential culturally-unique risk factors for Indigenous individuals. Although this workshop will have relevance to diverse risk assessment scales, particular attention will be paid to a recent meta-analysis on the cross-cultural validity of Static-99R.
